Are there any varieties of shrimp that eat algae and would take up the same or less bioload as otocinclus cats? Shrimp would add variety to the tank, but they would need to be small and do the algae-eaters' job well.

Amano shrimp are the most commonly used. you'll need a team of them though. About 1 shrimp for every 2g of water will help tremendously. Otos have their place, however. They are diatom slayers and every planted tank should have some.

Cherry shrimp are smaller than Amano's eat more types of algea and breed prolifically in your tank. Amano's are by all means quite cool, but for an overall algae eater I find the cherries to be far superior. Mixing them is an excellent option as well. More variety, less algae.

Will amano shrimp damage java moss and java ferns?

Too my knowledge, none of the shrimp mentioned will harm any of your aquarium plants. Like Most common snails, they clean the leaves without hurting your plants at all.

I plan on breeding flame tetras in the tank, and with the java moss i'll try to keep a few alive until adulthood. Would these shrimp be more of a danger than oto cats would in hunting them?
