Sometimes while watching my 75g with all "baby" preds I just get a warm fuzzy feeling inside me. Nothing like buying the predators of your dream and watching them grow before your ery eyes starting out with guppy, ghost shrimp, and small pellets. So cute. Mine consists of P. Ornatipinni and P. Senegalus and of course a Silver Aro.

I just bought 2 senegalus a few days ago for my tank, keeping them in a 20 L with other fish until I get my 75 next month..

They haven't touched any ghost shrimp or even noticed the danios.I've seen them eat flake food, shrimp pellets, tubifex worms and algae wafers..

They are only about 3 inches long..How big before they start grabbing feeders? Most of my fish are pretty quick so I think they'll be safe for a while.

I noticed that 1 likes to sit near the top of the water while chilling, the other near the bottom..The one that likes the bottom seems to be more explorative..The one on top eats and swims some on the bottom but isn't as active.

They do some wild stuff...I can hardly pull myself away from the tank to do other things..

I can't wait to get my 75 and move them into it...I'm going to move the Clown loaches over there also..

I havent fed mine bichirs any of those things yet... I was refering to the Aro about the feeders. Both of my bichirs are only about 2-3" and have been eating frozen beef heart, frozen brine, and frozen blood worms. They have HUGE mouths its really cool. I picked out the P. Ornatipinnis because it came up to me at the LFS every time I walked by so I had to buy him even though I didnt have the near $60 he cost lol. I've only had my bichirs for a few days as well but they are amazing to say the least... I recomend monsterfishkeepers.com or aquaticpredators.com both have a ton of information on both fish. I have read that it is actually better to raise the bichirs in a 20g until roughly 6" why I dont know

They don't seem to have the best eyesight..I'm guessing the 20 helps them to feed until they get it right..

Less space =more chance of finding the food.

Growing them out is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I kept a 5-7" P. senegalus in a 6' x 2' tank for several months. It never had problem finding food. Polypterids, like many fishes, have excellent scent reception.

I started in the hobby with a freshwater stingray. At thet time, I knew nothing and were guided by the LFS clerck (who knows nothing).

Watching him chase and eat feeder guppies gave me that "powerful" feeling, and I became in love with predators.

Now I have in my tank 2 rays, 1 clown knife and one albino senegalus (¿?)bichir. I had a reedfish (RIP).

Space wise, I've had my bichir for about 10 days, and he is doing well in the 235 gallon tank. He is 4" long only, but has little problem finding food and competing with the other fish. He likes to hide in the ornamental caves and rest in the plants leaves. However, sometimes you can see him free swimming around the tank.

By now, I feed him with tubifex worms and chopped earthworms. I've thrown feeder guppies into the tank, but the knife eats them all in a matter of seconds, leaving nothing to the others.
