if such fish exists, it's a hybrid cross. while the 'blue' dempsey is a mutation, it doesn't breed true and requires the input of standard octofasciatum genes with a blue in order to produce some blue offspring. a red version does not exist unless someone crossed a regular dempsey with a red devil or somesuch.

I have to agree. However, Some JDs are more brown then others. Red is a color in mixing paint to get brown. Some JDs may have more red in them then others and with the rights lighting it may even look more red. Also a lot of red in the tank may make the JD pick up those colors.

I've seen a handful of JD's with kind of a Rosy colored belly. There's a good example of one in Dr. Axelrod's Atlas. I agree, though, that such a fish, if truly "red" would either be a hybrid or some kind of mutation.

So much confusion is created in our hobby by pet retailers creating catchy names to sell more fish. Personally I think that the natural colors of most fish are far more attractive than any hybrid or mutation.

your right fish retailers do mislabel fish too sell them at a higher price.

And the one red jd I saw was in a dark tank witha lovis light on it so I beleave this fish is a myth. thank you all for your in put

Archocentrus panamensis: http://tangledupincichlids.com/images/panam.male.jpg

Archocentrus spinosissimus:

On the TangledUpInCichlids price list it has these two in the same family as the blue dempsey(Archocentrus octofasciatus). The panamensis is said to be red w/ blue spangles and the spinosissimus is purple w/ black spots. This could be what you are thinking about.
