I am in the market for a used tank. One of the deals i found has a saltwater tank for sale (not sure yet if it is just the tank for sale sans equipment or if it is still running).

If I want to convert that to a freshwater set-up what precautions do I need to take?

I know I have to clean it thoroughly and put water in and let it run for a while to dissolve other salts. What about the equipment? Are the filters compatible? I'll update with specifics regarding the state of the tank once I get more info.

Thanks.

You can use it, provided you give it a good clean.

Use a bleach water solution to ensure you clean it deeply enough and rinse, rinse, rinse and then rise again using water and declhorinator. Dry it and your are ready. Same goes to equipment.

Saltwater equipment should work in fw too (protein skimmers won't). Remember to wash it and discard any filter media that may be present.

If Oriongirl is around, she'll tell you to use Oxiclean instead of bleach. I use bleach cause I don't see oxiclean too often in the store.

After setting it up, rememeber the cycling thing.

Ma again. I forgot: if it comes with decor, you could reuse the plastic ones. If it has marine sand, crushed coral, seashells, etc... it can affect the water chemistry in a freshwater tank ans should be discarded or used with great6 care.
