How deep do you guys keep your gravel in a tank with live plants..My wife seems to think we have to much..Its about 2 inches deep.

If I have plants, I do a deep one (3-4 inches). But 2 inches seems good to me :thm:

2" is about perfect for most tanks. If you have mostly stem plants, 2" is fine. Rooted plants(swords, crypts, etc) do much better with a deeper bed(3-4")

Does the depth apply to pool filter sand also?

Thinking of switching over or maybe just putting it in the 75 gallon for the Senegal bichirs and Clown loaches..

2 inches might be good for burrowing fish, but you'll need to stir it up often to make sure no debris or anearobic bacteria build up under. I always go for 1 to 1.5 inches though.

In my new 75gs I'm doing 3" of Flourite mixed with some Argonite (for vals) and 1" of sand for loaches to burrow in. I got this from The Planted Tank:

And it's pretty much how I'm going to do it.

my 10 gallon has about 1 inch of large gravel. when i set up my 20 gallon, i will go for a finer gravel or sand over a plant-friendly substrait, since i have lots of rooted plants.

I'll have to bookmark that link ..Thanks!

Do you guys ever take your gravel out and rinse it off? My Nitrates are outrageous due to slackness in WCs and gravel cleaning...Would this be to drastic a move or remove any good bacteria?

I would never try to remove gravel from an established tank just to clean it. Talk about a mess.

Yeah... under the substrate of an established tank is a large collection of slimy things.
