filters for a 75....help!

I just bought a 75 gallon with an oak stand and two boxes of 'goodies'. The lady I got it from said that it was her ex-boyfriends and she hadn't a clue as to what anything was or worth. Just a quick skimming showed a few filters, some air pumps, tubing, decorations, chemicals, and other stuff. Well after bringing it all home and sorting through the boxes I've came up with an aquaclear 300 (I think) as far as filters go and the rest is all tubing for the undergravel system. I was wondering if this would be enough for the tank? If not, what size filters and brand would you recommended? It is going to be freshwater and contain a few clown loaches and a couple platys and maybe a few other medium sized fish but nothing drastic. Thanks! Saray :hi:
 
Sounds like most people on these boards use filter redundancy. Regardless of the AC300, go out and get another filter that is big enough for the tank, and use them both at the same time. If it were my tank I would ditch the UGF, I have heard nothing but horror stories about them. But that last part is just IMO.
 
I'd forget about the UGF and get another AC300 and put 1 at each end of the tank
also get extra sponges use 2 per basketand forget about the activated carbon-Anne
 
The UGF would probably be fine, but would need a good powerhead to run it. Also if you think you might want to give it a try look up RUGF or reverse underground filter. That is a better option. The AC 300 isn't really enough unless your fish load is really low or you want to do massive water changes. 2 AC 300 might do the trick. A canister filter is also a really good option. Something the size of a fluval 304 (there are many choices) works well. If you are stick for cash the setup you have will work but I really do suggest setting up the RUGF instead of the traditional as it requires much less to maintain.
 
on my 75 i have a fluval 204 and a 404. in the tank i have 2 JD's, banded leporinus, common plec, and gold nugget plec. 30% water changes weekly keep the tank looking beautiful :D
