is it normal for african to like to try to swim through tight spaces. Mine always want to swim between the heaters and glass, and always want to try to fit through very tight spaces. Is this normal with these fish?

If you are talking about mbuna then yes... they are rock dwellers and it is thier natural instinct to get into tight spaces in the rocks and caves. Do you have sufficient rockwork in your tank for them?

i am in the process of adding more but I believe my fish are malwai cichlids.
