Hello everyone I am a complete newbie to the CO Live Plant experience. I have read some of the post on here. My girlfriend went out and bought this "Turbo CO Bio System" made by "Red Sea." I was wondering if anyone could tell me if these CO Injectors are any good before I even open it.
Here is a link;

I have a 40 gallon tank and my lighting consist of two 20 watt "flouresent" bulbs

Any help will be appreciated.

you wont' need CO2 if you have that little light. What kind of plants do you have? If you have plants that need high light, you will need to get another 100 watts of light over the tank. Then you will need to fert and inject CO2.

I just bought one of those yesterday for my 20g. I've got 96w of light over that tank but I have to dose a lot of Excel to keep it under control, which is getting costly. Many people use the similar Hagen kit with success but with your lighting I'm not sure if it will make much difference. It certainly won't harm your tank.

'...production and diffusion of CO2 for aquariums up to 160 liters / 40 gal.'

You are pushing this system to the limit with your aquarium's size, and could
probably save a lot of coin by using a 2-liter pop bottle and picking up the line and other stuff bit by bit. I say probably because I don't see the price of the system anywhere on the page. How much is it?

And how much do they charge you for this? 'Red Sea’s Bio Generator Refill Kit.'
I probably come off as something of a cheap skate, but hate to see people spent money on things that can be handled in a more cost efficient way. You could use the money saved toward other stuff, like a pressurized system should you decide to increase lighting.
As has been mentioned above, you don't need an elaborate CO2 system because of your moderate lighting situation, but injecting CO2 can do nothing but aid your plant's growth even in moderate light.

Ah yes, the refill kit :D It's a cup of sugar and a packet of yeast. Honest, that's what it is. There's nothing in the kit I couldn't have done DIY but at least it made my wife happy to be buying something for my tank. On hindsight, a regulator would have made me happier.

Ah yes!!!
This is just what I'm talking about. They really rock and sock you for the follow-ups.
Now if dj baldwin minds the look of a 2-liter sitting on top of his tank, he could buy the original kit and then just mix his own home-brew from sugar, baking soda and yeast.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I dont know exactly the name of my plants, but I will find out ASAP, i think they are Anubias afzelii and Cryptocoryne walkeri but am not sure.

The System injector was $40 and the refills are $8. Is that too much? I am curious to know how you use the 2 liter bottle Len and make my own refill brew. Anyone care to share the secret? :D I have been thinking of upgrading the lighting. Another question I have is, will too much CO kill any of my fish if I don't have too many plants?

Once Again Thanks

hmm I only paid $25 for the system. It came with a refill and for $8, just use sugar and yeast instead. I can't see how they justify $8 for a cup of sugar and a tsp of yeast

Feel free to try the DIY method. It's much the same but why not use what you now have. I kind of like the powerhead that comes with it and it's a lot less fidgety than DIY.

I can assure you that you will never be able to pump enough CO2 into your tank to kill fish with that system. I'm not sure what the fatal level is but I've had my compressed CO2 at over 100ppm accidentaly and there was no signs of stress from the fish. Of course I freaked out big time :o

Well actually it was $35 after taxes, I've seen alot of them cheaper online but never in any of the LFS. I guess that is why my girlfriend got it for me.
It has the diffusion pump that attaches perfectly to my tank (via suction cups) and a funny looking water bootle thingy that will work perfectly for my own brew! :D reiverix is the brew really sugar and yeast? Can you help me with a step by step list? Overall, it looks okay, hopefully it works as good as it looks, but still those $35 could have went to the "sand fund" for my tank.

Yes it is a cup of sugar and about a 1/2 tsp of yeast. I'm not too sure what type of yeast it is. The manufacturer claims it will last a month but I'm a bit suspicious about that.

Are you having a problem setting it up?
