Every time I see them on Ebay or Aquabid there are a TON of bids! Why do they sell just the eggs of these fish? I know nothing about these fish, but they do look pretty awesome! If someone could give me a little info on them I would really appreciate it!

Aside fome discus and a couple african cichlids killies are imo the most colorful of the freshies. They don't live over a year -seasonal fish- so I don't keep them. Where they come from there is a dry season every year and they lay eggs just before the water dries up, then die. The eggs are traded since they can be stored. Short, beautiful lives. There are killie clubs wordwide just like cichlids and the rest. After you've seen a few different species you may understand the attraction.

I have seen the pictures. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! I don't know why you would want a fish that would die so soon! Does anyone know why they die after laying? The water wouldn't dry up in an aquarium.

Just to set the record straight. In home aquaria they live a few years but once mature which is just a few months, the female lays eggs every day of her life. This way you will always have killifish in your tank. It's just that they should be bred and raised in a seperate tanks.

Thanks Zman. I was repeating some info I read many years ago. At least I think I read it.The upside of getting old is I can re-read books from 30 years ago and they're brand new.

I asked in a separate thread, but I see Tricksterpup posting in here :)

Do you have any spawning mop yarn recommendations? Dunno what brand I'm using here but I've been boiling it two days and I'm still getting dye out of it. No way I'm putting that in my tank.

LOL, I saw that thread, and avoided it like the plague.. ;)
Actually, I am not a breeder of typical Killies, I just have a few that are constantly breeding in my tanks, such as an unknown native and my live bearer, which isn't a killie at all but still called the least killie.
The native I have likes breeding in some algae that I have growing in the tank so I tend to let some stay and pull out what I do not need.
