For me it has to be classic rock.. late 60's early 70's .. but I do listen to alot of earlier rock as well.. and even Elvis alot (means i'm getting old I suppose) .. I love all forms, but my favorite band?
Anything by Deep Purple up through Perfect Strangers album would rate as my all time favorite and most listened too.. Newer DP is alright.. but not a big listen for me.. Favorite Deep Purple Song? That's a tough one.. a Lyrical song by them I'd say "Child in Time" and Insturnmental would deffinetly be "Son Of Alerik".
In the later Music realm i.e. Alternative, Grunge etc.. Mother Love Bone .. which I still listen to on a daily basis.. sadly though the band never went far as the lead singer died.. parts of which the band later formed Pearl Jam .. whom are near the same level for me as Deep Purple in respect and likeability. :)
I also have moments of strange music taste and listen to alot of Celtic as well.

Okay...I'm going to prove my age and complete "un-coolness". My all time favorite is James Taylor!! LOL
I have pretty ecclectic taste in music...love Matchbox 20, The Beetles, George Strait, Miles Davis...those are my favorites I guess. How is that for an odd collection of music? LOL..OH and to really top off my nerdiness I ADORE broadway show tunes.

dude i love Opeth im actualy listening to it right now -lol- my favorite song by them is the Grand Conjuation
Well...lol....I don't know what my favorite music is !!
I do like Phil Collins quite a bit.......I prefer the late 60's into 70's style rock better than what's out there today....I'm partial to the folk tunes of the 60's and 70's as well, though NOT thier politics...lol...(commies!!)
Michael Murphy (if anyone knows who he is!)...James Taylor, John Denver, America, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Eagles, etc..etc...
I'll also listen to some country tunes...but mostly because I LOVE the fiddle and that's about the only style music that has a decent amount of fiddling/violin in it...that I can find on the radio anyway. Classical is good too....for the same reason...lol ! (Gotta LOVE that instrument !!) http://bestsmileys.com/music2/11.gif
I guess I can safely say that I perfer the mellower music with beautiful melodies and instrumentals...not so much the loud obnoxious ear splitting noise that my son prefers to listen to... Lol...Bless his heart..

Okay...I'm going to prove my age and complete "un-coolness". My all time favorite is James Taylor!! LOL
I would have to disagree with you here, mkml! James Taylor is awesome. It's amazing how his clean years are almost as good as his "not-so-clean-years". My listening taste is classic rock, late 60's, 70's and I like the harder stuff of today. I guess my listening is as diverse as you can get with everything enjoyed, but I mostly favor the alternative stuff.

Dave Edmunds has been my fave since '77, he is an incredible guitarist.
Brian Setzer/Stray Cats/BSO
Badfinger
early Beatles
Toby Keith/Trace Adkins/Brad Paisley type country
I used to hate disco, now I just dislike it strongly.
'Rap music' is a contradiction in terms.
I also can't stand the bands that replace talent with power chords.

Well, just because I like the song, dosen't mean I like the band. I love the song Nymphetamine, but every other song by Cradle of Filth I think is crap
Well, some bands I DO like are: System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold, Sevendust, Disturbed, and The Gorillaz. I don't like the overly hard stuff.
And I HATE Coldplay with the unholy passion of a thousnad burning suns :mad2:

I like many different kinds of music including Rock, Jazz, Classical, R&B, rap, trance, swing/big band, etc.
Most recently, I took my mom to see a rehearsal of "Carmina Burana (http://www.sfsymphony.org/templates/event_info.asp?nodeid=250&callid=93&eventid=927)" by the San Francisco Symphony accompanied by the San Francisco Chorus (http://www.sfsymphony.org/templates/chorus.asp?nodeid=79&callid=250&eventid=927), the Pacific Boychoir, and the San Francisco Girls chorus. Talk about intense! Just image 300 singing voices filling the symphony hall along with the powerful symphony working their magic.
I'm an avid Rush and Primus fan and I love the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, and the Royal Crown Revue. :)
"Modern day warrior,
Mean, mean stride,
Today's Tom Sawyer,
Mean, mean pride...."
:D
Peace...
I love everything except techno.
Blue Rodeo, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Counting Crows, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, Jack Johnson, Pink Floyd, Dallas Green, Todd Rundgren, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, Live, U2, Mariah Carey, Metallica, Aaliyah, Moist, Nirvana, REM, The Tragically Hip, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, Third Eye Blind, Supertramp, Xzibit, Ludacris, 50 cent, Boston, Queen, Alexz Johnson.........
and so many more but I bet everyone stopped reading by now anyway lol
My playlists have so much variety that I think I can please everyone!

Ramomes,
The Clash,
And newest on the list, The Yeah yeah Yeahs!! They really really rock!! Awesome guitar!!! Drummer's awesome, and that little drum machine they use (for rythm on some tracks) adds some really cool sounds to their style of music!

All I say is that I don't want to have to listen to it....it better not have obscene lyrics (he has a little brother who will sometimes listen to that ugly stuff) and NO degrading the LORD or sexual inuendos ! Of course, I can't understand any of it anyway...so I'm basically trusting him to adhere to that...I hope my trust is well founded !
You two probably would get along...lol...he's 16 too, though not into the fish like I am. He's got an itch to learn the electric guitar...he already plays piano and clarinet...music comes easy to him...like falling off a log !

Sub you're just not grasping the heaviness of the flute.
Well at least the boys in Metallica learned their lesson if you get your arse kicked by a band that's some have called a folk rock band dust off an old folk song, stand and deliver, and reclaim best heavy metal performance.
No doubt the Grammy people screwed up - Ian Anderson wondered if they had even heard a Jethro Tull song since Aqualung.
"I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya"
"If you don't ride with me while the devil's free
I'll ride with somebody else. "

I'm 31 and never have and never will like U2. As for the 60's and 70's I can't stand the stuff either. I was forced for too long to listem to it. I hae 4 older siblings. Country music for the most part my ex-wife made me sick of it. I listen to alt, hip hop, some 80's hair bands(MOtley Crue, Posion,ETC) chior, musicals, and Irish Rock. Current groups: Disturbed, Crossfade, Seether, Weezer, and Homeland. Homeland is a local Irish rock band. If you local electric fidal I would tell you to check them out, on there website. You can download some of there MP3. Just for the record I didn't think I'd like this music after listening to the other groups. But give them a listen. For people that like new rock, listen to the song Descent from the We Never Got This Far Alone. Their website is homelandmusic.com

My tastes run the entire spectrum but are heavily weighted with jam-improvisation and experimental oriented music.
Discs you would most likely find in my CD player at any given time are by bands like Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Phish, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Frank Zappa.
I'm also starting to appreciate some classical music and I've been getting into a lot of jazz.
Anything too "poppy" or simplistic tends to bore me. It seems that most of what we hear on the radio today is just mass produced crap designed to sound exactly like the song before it. I tend to appreciate musicians who don't fit neatly into any one genre of music. I'll give anything a fair listen if it's done with integrity and if the artists try to stretch the boundaries of music.

Hey, Another Medeski Martin n Woode fan!! Cool . .. Saw them live three times. Second time I saw them, we ended up right in the front. Leaning on the stage. I went with a few guys.... We smoked some of the happy stuff, but halfway through the show, I couldn't handle it. The way those guys play is so freaky!! their timing, their style, is so intelligent, that in the frame of mind I was in, it just made me want to figure out the "formula" too much, to the point that I started badtripping. I ended up leaving the front, going outside, and sat down on a bench for the rest of the concert. It was too much for me!!!
But they're freaken great!!!
As for greenday, yeah, they rock.. Saw them live twice, they really know how to get the crowd going!!!

I know what you mean Cheech.............sometimes when I'm at a show and the improv gets very heavy............very out there...........I'm left feeling like somebody wrung out my brain like a twisted dish rag. There are times when it's too much but then there are times when it's like an epiphany.
............Green Day............ummmmmm...........I saw them at a small club in PA just after they started getting air play. I was in the front row and they raged..........but the show was ruined for me once Billy Bob or Billy Jo or whatever his name is pulled his noodle out of his pants and "waved" at the crowd. I've had a hard time listening to them ever since.............

My taste in music is broad, but rock/metal is my favorite. A few of my favorites are:
Metallica (before they sold out and cut their hair)
G&R
Alice in Chains
Ozzy
Pink Floyd
Sepultura/Soulfly/Nailbomb
Drown
Fear Factory
Ministry
Cathedral
Coal Chamber
Pantera
Godhead
Testament (Alex Skolnick is a guitar god, but they have a new lead player now)
Sevendust (liked their first album anyway)
Machinehead
I'll stop there I guess. I also like the classic stuff like Zeppelin, The Stones, etc. and some country like Johnny Cash and Hank jr.

heh.. you'll have to try harder than that to offend me ;)
OK.. to explain a little more.. a Blank DVD will hold around 6 times as much data as a blank CD (give or take) so in the same physical space you can have 6 times the music.
And for me, personally, I do have every MP3 I have stored on a DVD somewhere, but I prefer them to be more accessible, a 200Gb hard drive in my PC will hold the same amount of music as around 250 MP3 CDs. and having them in a compyter means that I do not need physical access to them, I could listen to the music on any computer (or whatever, an xbox works well) in my house or at my place of work.
Maybe I should point out that I'm pretty disorganized too.. ;) and you don't want to know how many CDs and DVDs are around here.

I cannot pick a favorite genre. Just too hard as I really do listen to everything. Well, current rap leaves something to be desired in my opinion, ubt I really dig the old school stuff I grew up on like Doug E. Fresh, Run DMC, etc.
Country? Yeah, I can dig it. I really like the old old country like Hank Williams (yeah, Sr.), Marty Robbins but do listen to some contemperary stuff (grew up with the Womack brothers who formed Sons of the Desert).
Opera? Sure, lots on my computer. Classical? Yeah. Rock? Yeah. Punk? Oh yeah, was in a pop-punk power trio who got signed...
As for what I am listening to right now: Weezer; Blue Album Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition 2 cd set. Had a lot of B-sides and live stuff I lost on a hard drive blow out a few years ago, so I picked it up today at Best Buy with a credit on a Christmas gift I returned.

That's the only band I'd still go see live. I've played guitar for twenty years and mostly play Floyd. I've seen them 3 times over the years, always in outdoor venues. In the '90s the show was rained out by the third song. You just had to mention the fact that you get to see Gilmore.

Hey, don't worry about it/.// I'm the totally jelous one right now. I wish I had the oppurtunity to see Floyd live!! Never got to though...

But yeah, i am very excited to see gilmour play though...

I have the Pulse video from that tour. We saw them in Rice Stadium. It started raining halfway thru Shine On You Crazy Diamond and one by one the equipment started to fail and they didn't get to finish High Hopes. Needless to say I was bummed out. They had three sold-out shows then also. BTW, there's an old Pink Floyd album that was only released in Canada, I've read, called " A Nice Pair ". Ever run across it? It's the only one I don't have.

From Atom Heart Mother to The Final Cut on cassette and the rest on CD. My albums don't get played anymore. They're stored in plastic. The background on my angel breeder tank is the poster that came with Umma Gumma. Thanks for the tip about A Nice Pair. Haven't looked on ebay lately.

Sounds like he was trying to emulate Jim Morrison in an attempt to elevate his status. He can't compare to a rock legend no matter how hard he tries!

I won't defend green day since they sold out big time, but their first albums 38 smooth and kerplunk is good music. I used to like them till every album after dookie was worse than the last. after that, it all went downhill and I lost a lot of respect for them.

I kinda like Greenday.... I kinda see them as an "entertaining" type band,,,, something to just have fun listening to, but not to talk about how great musicians they are. Nothing wrong with that. They're great stage performers...
Anytime a band makes it big, they're seen as sellouts. It's the way it works. Either you stay underground, and small, play the music you love, or you become a little more mainstream, comprimise your music (a little bit) get a certain "look", and make tons more cash (if you get the oppurtunity to do so)... I guess it's normal. I wouldn't trash a band for that. If I don't like it, I just won't listen to it. Like Simple Plan.. Oh man, those guys get me sick!!!!

I liked Nirvana before they were popular and I still like their music. It's too bad Kurt isn't around any more, I bet he would still be writing great songs.
I can't say I hate bands for selling out, but I certainly hate the fact that they do sell out. Metallica used to be my favorite band and I will always love their old stuff, but since they became mainstream their music keeps getting worse. I won't listen to anything newer than the black album.
