I'm planning a 75 gallon planted tank.I already have 2 Senegal bichir and 2 Clown Loaches that will occupy the tank. What Cichlids,I prefer the Dwarf variety, and how many would be a good fit? What type of catfish/algae eaters do you use with cichlids?

My water parameters are in my signature,I'm still working on getting my Nitrates down to about 10 ppm.

keep in mind the adult size of the Polypterus (about a foot) when considering additional fish for this tank. also, clown loaches (as with most loaches) do far better in groups of 4-6 and ultimately also grow to a foot.

in my opinion, 6 or so fish that are a foot in length are all a 75 gallon tank can manage properly.

Eventually as the fish grow I'll also upgrade the 75 to a 125.

So you think I should add 2 more Clown Loaches?

They seem pretty content as 2.Most sites and forums, except this one,say Clowns rarely get near 12" in a home tank.Guess its because of improper care but even if they hit 12" wouldn't it take close to 5 years?I'd have time to upgrade to 125.
I really would like some mid/top fish.

Any Dwarf Cichlids you'd recommend?

true ... clowns are slow growers but while they may not put on that length for awhile, they do increase significantly in mass. i'd get a few more to facilitate a more normal behaviour ... it really does make a difference in their longevity.

Okay I'll add 2 more Clowns.

But since I have all bottom dwellers for the most part I'd still like some Dwarf cichlids.

I guess I could just get a bigger tank then the 75 I was planning on next month.

What size do you think would work, doubt I could afford the 125 right now, would need to check the difference in prices. If I went 90 could I get a pair or 2 of any certain Dwarf Cichlids?

I don't want to make the overcrowding mistake I'm in now.

a 90 has the same footprint as a 75 ... it's just taller and is not a particularly useful size for cichlids, except for angels and discus. 120 sounds good.

I have to remember its the size of the footprint and not necessarily the gallons..I think for now I'll just go 75,unless I find a great deal, and use the feeder fish as the mid/top fish until they are eaten.

Thanks..
