Really. It's been a pretty rough few months lately. I wasn't able to get on here because I had no internet access and no phone for a while. I lost my pretty girl Pearl last month. She was 12 years old and I had her all her life. She got a big tumor in her belly, but since she had bowel problems for the last 3 years or so, I thought the lump in her side was constipation. When I got her to the vet, she was too weak to survive any surgical attempt at removal and we had to put her down. I felt like I had a big piece of my heart ripped out that day. We had her cremated so I could have her buried with me. I promised her I would keep her with me always, you see. I got my phone and internet access back a few days ago after getting the huge vet bill paid...and then the big ice storm came on Thursday. I knew it was going to be bad when I was on my way to work at 7am and I saw big flashes of light every couple of minutes, it wasn't lightning! It was exploding transformers. My store never lost power, but when I called the office of my apartment complex at 3pm, they said the power had gone out at 10:30 that morning. Me and the hubby got home at 4:30 after a surprisingly busy day at work. What were these people thinking? There's a half inch of ice coating everything, the whole city is without power, no traffic lights, trees laying in the road all over the place and it's still raining...driving is very dangerous, so let's pack the kids in the car and go shopping! They weren't out buying essentials, either! We got home to our cold, dark house and gathered up everything we could use to deal with the power outage, turned on the oil lamps then sat around and listened to all the sirens until dark. My husband had to work the next day, so I got more supplies in the next town over, which still had power. I guess everyone in Greenville had the same idea as me! It took me 2 hours to get some groceries, gas was next to impossible to get. I'm glad my radio, alarm clock and flashlights use AA batteries, there wasn't a C or D size battery to be had at any cost. I got 60 batteries and some of those snap-n-shake glowsticks to use for nightlights. The only charcoal grill I could find to cook our food on was 84 frickin dollars! I got a steel trash can and a 'steak basket' like you'd use for camping instead. It worked great. We had no power and no heat for 2 days. We were lucky, though...we didn't lose much food, didn't lose any hamsters or birds, and no fish so far, even though the temp in my platy tank was 48 degrees this morning. I was worried to death about them, but my cat was the one that really scared the life out of me when I woke up. Pearl's buddy for the last 5 years, Kit N. was sleeping next to us. I woke up and petted her, she didn't move. I thought, 'What's wrong with her?' and nudged her. She still didn't move, so I nudged her harder. No movement. I halfway picked her up and was hollering 'NO!!! NO!!! KIT.N!!! HONEY, KIT N. FROZE TO DEATH!!!' when she opened her eyes and gave me a grumpy glare as if to say, 'Hey! I was sleeping, you nimrod!'
How's your weekend going? :D
