Walmart now has some of the best fish in my area. One of the LFS closed down and the manager is now working at the walmart fish section. He is doing a really good job and knows what he is talking about. He will even do special orders. Pretty suprising after all the smack talk i have heard about walmart on this forum.

I wonder if the LFS closed down because of the WalMart? ;)

Regardless, a big chain like that... the phrase "individual results may vary" comes to mind. Sounds like they do have a good setup, and that probably has a lot to do with the guy they've hired to manage it. Other stores may not have as good a manager.

I'm not a big fan of WalMart, but I'm glad to hear you've got a good setup near you.

Actually my complaint with walmart is not them nor their employees, but rather the cost cutting suppliers they buy fish from. Unless this particular walmart uses a different supplier than the rest of the chain, this employee is still dealing with unhealthy and damaged fish.

the employees can do all they want but they can't undo the poor living conditions the fish have been in befor they get them.

I have great respect for the pet department employee that takes care of the fish at my walmart, but that doesn't mean I'll buy any fish there.

The wal-mart here has some bad fish. I bought an angel fish from them that died in a day or two, and an oscar that had sezuires(sp?) about 20 times a day, and eventually died. Anyways glad to hear at least a couple have some decent fish.

I don't care what walmart has or how much cheaper they are, I never step foot in that store...I don't agree with the way they do buisness.

I always buy basic Items for my aquariums from Wal-Mart. They are just cheaper. As for fish, I only bought a betta from them. He is pretty healthy, the only problem is many of the more...psycotic betta owners don't like them for the fact of the type of finnage they have.

Whats wrong with the way we do business??? LOL I know at the Wal*Mart I work at my Wal*Mart at the current moment our fish selection is sufferin due to the recent absence of our department manager who cares for the fish mostly. The previous department manager use to take real good care of the fish there. It all depends on who's caring for them normally they hire regular people to care for fish and well most dont know nothin bout fish care. Also Ive seen some customers complain bout sick diein fish and when they bring the fish back the water is ice cold so of course the fish are diein n sick. I could honestly say they try n care for the fish just they arent as knowledgeable as I wish they were. I wish I would get promoted n get pets as my department. =P LOL Hey if you dont like Wal*Mart Then cool just dont shop there just like the way I wont shop at Target cuz I dont like them. To each there own. On another note I prob wouldnt buy from my own store cuz they only carry fish I dont want LOL or cant have

Wal*Mart has has a deleterious effect on local economy (putting many places out of business) and their bullying tactics for obtaining cheap wholesale merchandise has damaged the economy on a nationwide basis and devalued market goods across the board.

Wal*Mart always uses the "lowest bidder" as their wholesale supplier and therefore merchandise that they receive that is perishable (like live fish) is often poor quality. In order to retain profit margin, these low bidders do not take care of their stock like a more reputable company.

Another way to look at it is the more fish they sell that die the more people will come back to buy more. Some people don't know any better (like the "I thought goldfish only lived for a few months" crowd).

Caveat Emptor.

Well...that was the most useless post about Wal-Mart I've ever heard. Just because they sell guns and ammunition doesn't mean local gun stores are going to go out of business. Just because they sell fish and pet supplies doesn't mean pet stores are going out of business. And the whole "bullying tactics" that they use isn't bullying at all. Buying out to the lowest bidder is just good business sense. And I still don't get why people go with the "poor quality" excuse when talking about merchandise from Wal-Mart. They sell the exact same thing that any other business does. The only reason that they are cheaper is because the profit margin per store is low. Before you people badger Wal-Mart on their business ethics you should at least use a little common sense.

I sure hope by "YOU PEOPLE" that you are not refering to me. Common sense is the EXACT REASON I dislike walmart.I have nothing against the employees at walmart and I hope that person did not take offence to my post.I just don't like the way they do their buisness.

They make US dollars by buying and shipping goods from overseas. They buy huge amounts of bulk and can sell for lower prices than local community buisness owners can, hence, you take the dollar out of the american small buisness owners pocket and put it into a company who does not re-invest in the very country it makes it's money on. They bully their way into communities that do not want a "supercenter" and get MASSIVE tax breaks. They have HORRIBLE benefits in compairison with other fortune 500 companies, they don't allow their employees to form a union....the list goes on and on.....I really didnt want to get into this...but I was provoked

none of this has anything to do with fish :duh:

And while we're in fairy land...

:fairy: :joe: :joke: :bday: :troll:

...I've learned against making arguments like this. Suffice to say I believe what I believe, and you can believe what you believe.

Now if I buy my fish at Rhode Island Aquarium, and you buy yours at Wal*Mart, let's wait 2 years and see who has more fish left (and it won't be wally world, I assure you of that).

None of the Walmarts here sell fish, and only thing I shop Walmart for anyhow is my other hobby because they get unique walmart only items.. Die-cast Cars.

I have read that alot of breeders from certain countries (I forget which) Use Cyanide in capture of fish.. and this causes illnesses etc, and in one of the above post I read an Oscar having seizures alot.. I would assume Cyanide would cause such things :(

Point i'm getting at, is any of the Lfs I goto one of my first questions is, where they get their fish from.. and of course if i'm satisfied with the Answer then I take a serious look at which they offer.

I know alot of us are on a budget with this hobby and prices can add up rather quickly.. but when it comes to my living aquarium inhabitants, if I got to spend a bit more for quality it all works out in the long run without sickness, etc. that can kill the other tank mates or destroy the tank as a whole.

my 2 cents :)

actually the reason why they do so smoking is that they have such huge huge huge buying power and those that they purchase from make more in the long run due to the volume that is purchased from them

as a business person i very rarely buy what is cheapest since the adage that you get what you pay for proves true or so i have found

and i think that people recognize quality and all you have to do is provide better service and people will use your service i really dont shop at wal mart but the dead fish sucked up on the filters is enough to tell me toxic water bad fish stay away

I've also been to a walmart with a really great looking fish department. The woman there seemed to care about the fish and the tanks were very clean and fish looked great.

I've also been to walmarts with 30 green spotted puffers slowly dying and eating on other dead bodies. It really irks me when I see this kind of treatment because green spotted puffers are brackish and its not that difficult to do a tiny amount of research and find that out. They cannot live on the flakefood walmart feeds either. I've seen way too many people on forums that buy a GSP from walmart and the employee said 'oh, they will be fine in this 1 gallon bowl'. A fish that reaches SIX inches in a 1gallon bowl!!!!

Even if there are some good walmart fish departments, I would rather see them all closed down.
