maybe some crushed ceramic pots?

No expereince with this but I have been asking the same question. Fluval sells those hexagoanl pieces with hollow centers. I think those are ceramic.

I am eager to see what else people suggest.

There's a lot of cheap bio material out there, but I've used dish washing scrubbers. They're the net-like plastic material that's rolled up into a scouring pad.

becareful about the scrubbing pads. Some/most of them are treated with antibacterial stuff that isn't safe of fish.

I drilled large holes in a large dia pipe was left with a gallon of compresed pvc ribbon I,ve cut 1/2" PVC into wafers.Stole my kids bristle block set he never liked anyway.Used a bag of lava rock for the last 5 yrs love to attach plants to the rocks (in the tank)
For your tanks filters fill them with your diced straws. Also consider useing filter floss in those instead.

Crushed lava rock works really well. I have about 10 lbs of it in my canister as a bio-medium.
