A little background: I set up a 46g bowfront reef just before Christmas. Finally have some low-level livestock in there and I'm just waiting for the tank to stabilize a bit. Anyway, I've got a bit of cyano, as is to be expected, but it really hasn't attacked the sandbed, glass, rock, or other favorite haunts. For some reason, the stuff has accumulated on the water surface. It's gotten progressively worse, blocking out a good degree of light, and leaving my arm red everytime I plunge in to tinker. I have no sump on this tank, so there's no overflow that would otherwise make quick work of it. Tried breaking up the surface with powerheads and what not, but couldn't get rid of the stuff.
BrianH recommended a surface skimmer made by Fluval. Hooked this silly looking thing up to the empty canister I run on the tank, filled the canister with new floss hoping to catch all this cyano, and with great anticipation, plugged 'er in. Within minutes, this contraption eagerly slurped the goo from the surface. I actually sat and watched the water column get brighter. I'm thrilled :)
Anyway, just thought I'd share this. It looks to be a great alternative for people running systems without sumps. Thanks again Brian!
