I am going to start a 29 gallon reef. How many power heads and what kind should i have. I have a max jet 600 right now.

2 @ OVER 10 TIMES YOUR TOTAL WATER VOLUME IN THE TANK, it's just good for circulation.
 
Which way do i point them?

I dont want dead spots at all so how will the flow get behind the live rock?
 
could I go with 3

would 3 power heads hurt anything? and can you recommend some good power heads and sizes for my tank please.

I like maxi jets and Aqua Clears. I prefer using more, slightly smaller ones, though you can have turnover anywhere from 10-20 per hour and be fine for MOST animals. I had 2 of the smallest AC model in a 10 with no problems.
 
Not really. You don't want a lot of surface agitation, as this increases evaporation and salt creep. A skimmer, or overflow box, or sump will usually provide more than enough agitation for gas exchange, and confined enough to keep evaporation to a minimum. Salt creep in inevitable, but controlling it by reducing surface agitation where you can is a good thing.
