What do you think of these? My little sis wants these because she is too young to take care of a fish tank and she wants a pet of her own. She is well on her way to becoming a fish owner; she understands not feeding them too much, changing the water, and she sort of understands dechlorinating. The best part is, she's only five! This is normally the age of getting a goldfish bowl, but well, I knew better. ;)
What do you think of getting her some? I am thinking of getting her the "magic castle" for her birthday. She could take care of them 'all by herself(with PLENTY of supervision!)'

;)

I don't like them at all. Maybe a good pet for a little one, but care is still involved.

I think it's a great idea for a 5 year old. With a big sis like you, she's already on the road to a good start.

I've got a bunch of them hatching out now for my tetras. I think that they're great. ;)

Have you looking into Triops for your sister? They're significantly larger than brine shrimp and have similar care requirements. I got a set of them for my second cousins this year.

Seamonkies are fun and all, but hook your little sis up with Triops. Bigger, cooler, and they come in a similar package with little castles and fanciful backgrounds. I've seen triops packaged with little "viewer windows" built into the environment to magnify em with. Wataugachicken has gotten Triops more than once, and she uses the old micro tanks as snail shacks when she runs out of triop eggs, so you could upgrad little sis to taking care of any baby snails you have in the tank. As Watauga would say "Goodstuff Mr.Man!"

I loved sea monkeys when i was a kid...Remember the ads in the comic books??? Mind you they never "danced to music" or drove cars, but fun to watch none the less...

If Sea Monkeys don't work out, try an Ant Farm!

Just don't load it up with "fire ants"!

I got an ant farm for my birthday whaen I was about 5. You had to send away for the ants, but I was impatient....so I just put a piece of candy in it and set it outside. What a mess...

I saw in a magazine this ant farm that uses a type of gel instead of sand, and the gel contains all the water and nutrients they need. Looks wicked awesome in a blacklight too :joke:

Well at least they're not depicting them to look like little sea-people anymore! I talked my mom into ordering them for me from the back of a comic book back in the late 70's. I don't think they ever hatched.

Sea monkeys are fun, heck I've had them many times over the years (I'm 47) and have Sea Monkey tank going right now. The yellow topped galleon model.

I say go for it!

Happy new year all!

I think sea monkeys are best lightly sauteed in lemon and spread on little toast triangles.
