aeration

Gaseous exchange principals are the same with SW: increasing surface area and airflow over the surface, and breaking surface tension. But HOW that's accomplished in SW is slightly different.

Since splashing results in saltcreep, in SW you aim for gentle ripples and currents at the water's surface. Most of the rest of gaseous exchange is accomplished by the protein skimmer's millions of little bubbles.

so therefore i wouldnt need to use an airstone adn airpump? like i would freshwater

Negative, no air stones. As saltwater keepers we take great pains to eliminate all bubbles from our main tanks.

so i have a 400 gallon tank and a 125 gallon wet/dry with my skimmer in the sump i use my old freshwater air bubble strips and the air pump int eh main tank as ive been afraid of not enough aeration so all i need to do is pull em out n make sure there a slight ripple in the surface (which would be from ym return piping) is this right, i dont wanna do it yet n teh fish die cause not enough air it worries me a lil so im double checking

Just make sure you got LOTS of water movement inside the tank itself. Remember these animals typically live on the reef, there is LOTS of water movement alot of the time. Basiacally turn the water over about 15-20 times the volume or, 20x400 = 8000 GPH worth of pumpage, you can go less with fish only so at 15x400 = 6000 GPH

Air stones really dont add much in the way of oxygen to the water as the bubbles are too big to defuse into the water and around 90% of the air goes straight out the top if not more, so water movement is better all around. The most oxygenated water in the world are white water rapids, see the corralation? (sp)
