Hello,

I just noticed a group of Bolivian rams (Microgeophagus altispinosa) at my LFS today. As I've finished cycling my 30 gallon tank, I'd like to get some fish in there and am considering these guys.

Are they best kept in harems of 2 or 3 females to 1 male, or do they pair off instead? Does anyone know a good way to sex these fish and will they pair off if I just put a females and male together in my tank? Lastly, would a 30 gallon (3" L x 1"D) be adequate for a group of these fish assuming that I'll have a school of tetras in there (possibly 5-7 lemon tetras) as well as 3-5 hatchet fish? I also have a SA bumblebee catfish that will be in the tank.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bolivian rams can be difficult to sex, especially if they are less than full adult size. Fortunately, they are generally very easy to keep as a small group. I would suggest 4-6 individuals for your tank. THey will then select their own mates and you can work to get a successful spawning pair.

I currently have a 30 gal that houses 6 full grown adults. There are two pairs and two individuals. The pairs will spawn fairly often, defending the immediate area around the eggs. However, I have not been able to raise the fry in this tank. I need to provide a spawning tank with just a pair if I want to raise the fry.

I have kept Bolivian Rams for nearly 20 years (same strain) and they are a favorite of mine.
