My old heater was no longer working thsi morning and I lost a few fish, so I surried to petsmart and bought a new 200watt marineland heater and it will heat up for a minute but even at the max heat 89 degrees the waters still around 65-70 degrees I have a 55gal and a 200 watt is what is suggested for this size tank anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

maybe its a dud exchnage it. but maybe its just not enough power to keep your aquarium at the temperature that you want. Maybe get 2 of them or get one thats a higher wattage.

I would go with two 150's. Since you already have a 200, a second 100 or 150 would be fine.

Heaters will fail, it's just a matter of time. They fail in two ways, always-on or always-off. With two heaters, your damage will be minimal either way. Just keep a constant eye on the temp to spot a problem early.

how long has your new heater been on in your tank before you measured the temp in the tank? if you have a larger sized tank, it will still take a while for all the water to warm up (judging from your post, you couldn't have had it in your tank for more than 20hrs)

Perhaps try a partial water change with some warmer water.

Nothing too hot but close to the ideal tank temp desired. This will help stabilize & the heater will not have to work quite so hard to get things up to proper temp.
