How do I add substrate to my tank?

I have a small 10 gallon aquarium with a few plants. I would like to add substrate to my tank. How do I do this? Do i just mix it with the gravel?

We need some clarification on your termonology. Substrate means anything you put on the bottom of the aquarium. So gravel is considered a substrate, as is sand...etc.. So what type of substrate would you like to mix with your gravel?
