Hi all,
I am looking to set up an 80g tank for Cichlids.
I have had numerous different fish before including, Convicts, Rams, Krib and keyhole. Some of which i have been fortunate enough to have bred in my Tanks.
I was looking for some ideas for this Tank, something different but easy to obtain as i live in Ireland, there are not many retail outlets that have many cichlids, if i want some i nearly have to order them. Shell dwellers would be a nice idea , what do u think.
Regards.

Not that it can't be done but being small shellies are often recommended for small tanks. A tanganyika habitat would be nice. Too small for northern pike though :)

Hi,
Ghinksman, very good, u probably guessed i am a fisherman u should be a detective, latin is not my fortay.
I used to have small pike( 3 inches) in a 6ft tank, i fed him/her on worms and minnow . When it got too big(9 inches) i put him/her back inh the lake. The only other fish in the tank apart from the buffet was a native crayfish, it aloso went back to its original home.
What cichlids would u recommend, could u mix shell dwellers with other cichlids , or other fish, if so what sort??
Would u prefer other cichlids if u had a spare tank??
I would like to keep a busy tank, with territorys and fish HOPEFULLY eventually breeding.
.
Thanks for all your help..
Regards,
Denis

Try also looking into Lake Tangynikan or Lake Malawi cichlids from africa. There is a vast range of fish from these lakes, such as the cichlids of lake tangynika, which range from some of the world's smallest (shelldwellers) to the largest. You could get some really neat cichlids, all that would live together in relative harmony (you cant get cichlids without getting fights though ;) ).

Pick a water type first, the easiest being close to your tap water. On the softer / acidic side you can go with South/Central American cichlids. The African river systems offer interesting choices for a "community tank". Butterfly fish, African knife, elephany nose, kribs etc. If your water is naturally hard and alkaline the typical "African cichlids" would be a good choice. Plenty of information on each on this site as well as dedicated cichlid sites.
