Gourami Problem

I'm new to this site, but it is really quite helpful.

I'm only 18, so when i went to the pet store, i really got suckered. I bought a 5 g aquarium for my dorm room and the sales lady talked me into buying a figure 8 puffer (which I now know needs brackish water), a pink kisser gourami (which grow to be quite large) and a pleco. Well even though my fish arent compatible and the tank is rather small for them, they have survived for 6 months. But this week, I noticed chunks out of Addies fins (the pink kissers). I was wondering if it was because the puffer is getting older and is territorial or what.

I am planning on moving these fish to a bigger aquarium asap, do u think it will help?

Personaly I would try and take the puffer back, unless you plan on setting up two tanks..one brackish and one not. Then I would give that lady a piece of my mind or talk to someone higher up if possible. But YES a bigger aquarium will help, well it will help which ever fish you plan on accomedating (brackish or not) anyway.

Good luck...I've been there, believe me I was suckered into 3 bala shark, 2 columbian shark, 2 irridesent shark and 2 dwarf gouramis for a 30/gallon!!

Age has nothing to do with being suckered in. Happens to everyone at some point. We bought our first tank, for our 4 year old son, in August and took home a 20g, 3 silver dollars and 2 tiger barbs.

Not quite as bad as what gstoffer got shafted with, but that's only because my son picked the fish out. My husband was looking at the bala sharks :)

We ended up taking the tiger barbs back about a month ago, but only because they didn't fit in with what we wanted to do, and still have the silver dollars. They are 3.75" in length now, and one of them is about 4" tall, and in my 36g for a few days while I get the 65g ready. They are gorgeous fish and I do not think they are stunted at all. Hope not, I want them to grow as big as they can.

Since we have two different types, we purchased 3 more a couple of weeks ago and now have 3 Metynnis hypsauchen (very tall, very shiny) and 3 Metynnis argenteus (the shorter spotted ones) schooling together waiting for their new tank.

As to the actual question:

Your puffer will nip at anything you put in the tank with it and are best in a species only tank. They are hunters by nature.

The pleco, if its a common pleco, will grow to 12+ inches easily. The gourami will need a 55 gallon tank.

No, unfortunately it won't. The puffer needs to be in a brackish tank and it also needs to be fed snails several times a week or its teeth will overgrow.

The gourami is a freshwater fish that needs 55 gallons. The pleco will outgrow even the 55 gallon tank.

I would suggest, unless you plan on purchasing a 55 gallon for the gourami and an even bigger one for the pleco, that you return or sell the gourami and the pleco.

Buy a 15 gallon brackish tank for the puffer and start feeding him snails. Puffers are great fish. If you have any questions about your pufferfish or setting up/maintaining a brackish tank, please post in the Brackish Forum here.

Well, it wasn't actually ME that went to the LFS, my son was with my Mom and the called to ask if he could get some fish for the aquarium we had just got from my Aunt, (since my Mom offered to buy the fish), of coarse I said sure...I just told them to be sure what they got was compatible and would be OK in a 30/g, well you see what they came home with!!! To top it off they were told ALL the fish were brackish and to add aquarium salt to the tank for them, OH they were told all kinds off false stuff theres more to this but I'd take a whole thread up with it!! and by the time I found out the truth it was too late!!!
