Does it matter if my laterite and gravel is mixed together or does it have
to sit under a layer of sand? I see this question was posted earlier, but htere was no reply. Can anyone help out? Thanks.

Gord.

Laterite IME is best mixed in the base layer of gravel (bottom 1/2 to 1") and capped with just gravel. No sand cap is needed and would not last anyway, as the sand will end up at the bottom, with the gravel above.

substrate

i want to use gravel & sand for my planted aquarium. i am not happy using
floura base. it breaks down & leaves my aquarium not clear at all. i don"t see why sand & gravel would not do just as well as floura base. don"t plants in the wild grow in sand & gravel. arern"t the plants using waste from the fish as well as co2 & Light to grow as well as some added fertilizer to thrive. i would appreciate some input on this subject.
