I have a 120 gal tank that has been up for about a year. I have 5 star fish in the tank. They just do not keepup with all the algy in the tank! The tank is not in the sunlight. I keep cleaning the glass. Can someone help ?

Phosphates

What are your phosphate levels, do you use tap water? What cleanup crew have you got in there? What types of star fish do you have? What are your water perameters? What photo period are you using for your lights, and what lights do you have?

every thing is good as far as levels go ! I do yous tap water but it is filtered and I add stress coat and cycle. As for the lights I use the light that came with the tank . The light is on about 6 hours a day. This is my first salt water tank so I'm new at all of this. I have 5 star fish 3 Chocolate Chip Stars and 2 Orange Linkia Stars. I aslo have Serpent Star and a Orange Serpent Star . that's all the stars I have. I also have a Urchin Combo and a Tube Anemone - Purple. I do have 2 shrimp aswell. Then the fish. Oh ya this might help it's a redish purple algy.

Sounds like cyno

Sounds like Cyno, how is the circulation in the tank? How many times are you turning the water over with powerheads etc?

Are you measuring phosphates with your testkit?

Are you able to post any pics?

Ok I have been reading alot of sites on saltwater tanks. I have 3 powerheads they are aqua clear 50s I aslo have a rena canaster filter it's the biggest one they have. It is Cyno I looked it up. I'm not sure how you post pics on here? I really think that the fish store I go to has no idea what they are talking about. They want me to get a actinic bulb and they said it will help keep the algae down. That's not what I have read! Testing for phosphates no I do not have a phosphate tester in the kit that they sold me ! So that is no. I can tell you that the PH is at about 8.2 the ammonia is 0 the nitrite is at 0 and the nitrate is at 0. I have also found some white flakes in the tank. it's not salt!! I find that when I remove the Cyno from the glass these white flakes come off the glass.. I'm really not happy with the fish store at this point. I thought that they would know what they are talking about and now I'm finding that they don't at all.

I have had fresh water fish for about 15 years and now this is all new to me. I have an other question for you, I have a diotom filer that I used on the 110 gal fresh water tank when the water got bad. Can I use that on the saltwater tank?

Thank you for all your help!!

I would not use the diatom filter with a marine tank.

White flakes may be stressed coralline algae or a tube polychaete.

It sounds like the problem is in the water you are using. It only takes little nutrients to fuel algae, especially cyanobacteria.

You also may need more flow for a 120. I had to add additional flow when cyano struck me. The power head alone is 820gph.

what water should I use? how do I get more water flow? I have a aqua clear 500 top filter that I'm not using, will that help?

A RO/DI water filter ( reverse osmosis) from ebay will do the trick, to get more water flow simply add more powerheads, the aqua clear will add addition water flow, you could runn it with no media inside the unit, or with active carbon.

I do have a rena fillstar 3 canister filter on the tank aswell. The adding a powerhead could be hard to do seeing that it's a 120 tall. I don't want my hands in the water. My friend has a 150 gal he runs 4 power heads and a bio wheel. I think the water flow in my tank is ok the plants move all the time even the little ones are waving all the time. I think that the problem is phosphate level is to high. I need to get it down. The glass is clean on the tank but the bottom in where the algae is. I did have turbo snails but they where eaten. LOL I think that I'm going to get a mico-algae and add the aqua clear 500.
