I made a post some weeks ago about my cichlids and pop eye. I have since tested my water more thoroughly and found the nitrate levels off the scale. The test kit goes up to 160 and that was the reading. Could this be the reason for the poor health of some of my fish?

did u cycle the tank? or even preform a water change, i know it sounds kookie but just trying to figure it out

I should of posted my tank specs so here it is. It's a 120 gallon that has been running for over 10 years now. I do water changes every week 20 to 50% depending on how long it takes to clean the gravel out.

Nitrates that high = bad water quality = disease

I had the same problem with nitrates.I did daily water changes of 25% for a week.I then did 33% water changes every other day for a week.Until I finally got my nitrates down to 20-30 range.

I'm now able to do 25% a week changes again.

I've never had to deal with popeye and don't know waht meds to tell you to use,but I do know the water changes will help.

If your other water parameters are close to your tank parameters then you could probably do 2 -25% changes a day.My paramters didn't allow me to do that or I would have shocked my fish.

You must have posted while I was in the midst of my posting.Sounds like OTS.

Do a search on OTS,Old Tank Syndrome, you should find some help in those posts.
