Well, i've been wondering...does hardness affect fish? I'm new and i have hard water in my tank...my fish store owner said that the worst it would do is put some white stuff on the suplies but i could just brush it off...does it affect the fish in any way?

A certain fish that comes from a certain water will like a certain hardness level, along with a certain pH.

However, most freaswater fish can addap to many levels of hardness and pH, as long as those are not extreme. If your water is TOO hard, you can try using a mix of tap water with distilled water to soften it a bit. You could also try a reverse osmosis unit, but those are expensive.

In the last case, you could try keeping "hard water" fish. You can do some research and find a fish that will enjoy your hardness level.

BTW, what are your water kH and gH readings?

Wait a second....what are those!?!?! :read:
:hi: Thanks for the help anyways

Water hardness is a measure of the amount of dissolved mineral in the water. Soft water has less disolved mineral then hard water. That's why when hard water evaporates leaves those white residues in your glass.

KH, or carbonate hardness is the measure of dissolved carbonate in the water. This parameter is closely related to pH.

GH, is the measure of other dissolved minerals, such as manganese and other (can't recall).

Both are measured in part per million or German degress. In order to know your water hardness you need to perform a test. In most fish stores you can buy a test kit that includes pH (acidity or alkalinity of water), hardness, ammonia, nitrites and nitrate tests.
