I've been soaking a piece of driftwood for a week or two now, and have noticed that there is a shimmer to the surface of the water, mostly blues and greens. Anything I should be concerned about? Will this go away once I move the wood to my tank, since the tank is filtered and the bucket obviously isn't?

Big Als, so it shouldn't be anything weird, but I don't think it is coming from the bucket either...

hmm well I'm stumped, sorry! I was going to say maybe it picked up some oil from outside but since you bought it from a store I would think that it would be pretreated to make it safe for tanks. I've never had to deal with that so I cant really offer any advice but maybe someone else can. I'm interested to know what to do as well. Good luck!

Definitely sounds like oil or some petroleum product. I'd take it back.

Has it been sitting open topped? Could be something settling out of the air, especially if this is near the kitchen.

It has been near the kitchen...I don't think we've done much serious cooking since its been soaking though  ~~!!! It definately has not gotten any cleaning products or anything like that in the water. Should I resoak it for a week or so in a different spot? Will it be ok to use?

It is a combo of tannins and stagnation... Ever leave a cup of black tea out and it gets the same sort of film on it? rainbow coloured like oil in a puddle, but you can break it with your finger tip??? It is nothing to be worried about...Change the water frequently to remove tannins...I boil it to speed it up...Still never get it all out though..
