I was thinking of getting a pair of firemouths to keep with Australian rainbows in my 35 or 40 gallon tank. Is it tricky getting a pair that will tolerate each other? I like peace.

If possible buy 4-6 and let them pair up on there own then you can trade in the others.

if you get them from a LFS and they are already with other firemouths, they may be okay.
that's not to say that things don't change.but generaly the firemouths are considered a 'peaceful cichlid'

if you find a pair they may become aggressive during mating.

good luck

My juvi firemouth is always flaring his gills at everything in the tank, especially my green terror.

You should be fine with two firemouths. They should get along, they can be considered to be peaceful. From my experience, they typicaly are not peaceful, but they will co-exist especailly in a 40g, there will be plenty of space. And with reguards to your rainbows, they are pretty sizeable and fast, they wont' have any problems surviving.

Thank you. What about individual specimens, or that of othe ciclid speicies for that matter-- is there anything "wrong" or stressful in keeping on cichlid in the 35 or 40 gallon tank (Boesmanni rainbows in it)? Or would that be boring, both for the fish and its keeper?

I have 1 small firemouth and he is 1 of the most aggressive fish in my tank I would not put them w/ rainbows.

Rainbows are fastmoving and should be ok. Firemouths are not the most aggressive cichlids out there.

my little firemouth flares its gills at everything..... vicious little thing, gets beat on by the convicts tho
