Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone can help me. I have a thirty litre tank and I want an airpump that is completely silent. I dont know if these exist, I've had two so far and they just seem to get louder and louder as the night goes on. Plus I can't stand little continuous noises. Is there anything I can buy that is silent or am i best moving my fishtank out of my bedroom.
I currently have a rena air 50.

Are you using an UGF or something else? if its a UGF you could use a powehead, or I have seen an airpump at a friends that was silent, (he said it was expensive, not sure how much or even the brand). If you are using another type of filter, and the airstone is for "oxygenating the water", your filter will previde plenty of O2 and you can ditch the airpump.

im only new with all the fish tank stuff
all i know is that the pump does the oxygen and the cleaning, it powers the filter which i think is under the gravel

Ok sorry. UGF= under gravel filter. So theres a plastic plate with holes in it under the gravel, with a clear plastic tube coming out, and the airstone is inside the tube right? Thats an UGF. And in this case the airpump does in fact provide the oxygen(through surface agitation) Like I said, you can look for a power head, its basically a submersable pump that takes the place of the airpump/airhose on top of the filter tube. Before I forget WELCOME TO AC!!!!!!!

I could have written this post! I put an air pump with a bubble stone in my 55 gallon the other day and I swear to god I'm going to go out of my freaking head. I despise constant noise anyway and I'm about to lose my mind with the constant buzzing noise. I've even tried wrapping it in cloth, setting it on styrofoam, and so on. Next, I'm going to try something I found on about.com and hang the dang thing inside a plastic jar with a hole cut through the lid for a cord...I just have to find a plastic jar for it first.

Try a bigger airstone. Sometimes pumps build up alot of back pressure if the pumped air becomes too restricted by either a clogged airstone, or an airstone that is too small. This back pressure will make the pump vibrate loudly. Another option is to put the pump inside a small cardboard box and pack sponges, pillow filler/floss, etc around it completely and seal up the box so only the airline tubing and power cord are protruding from the box.

When I used one in the past i just took a handtowel and folded it a few times and put it on top of that.

Sometimes it would vibrate itself off and make a racket.I see no reason to own an airstone now.I have a powerhead instead and if I want more air I just unscrew the valve a bit.

Tons quieter than a pump.

Vibrator pumps are noisy - the 60-cycle hum magnified and amplified. Suspended by elastic from wall- or ceiling-mounted hooks will damp that noise a bit. But bubbles themselves make noise, you cannot silence that.

If you want silent tanks, don't use airstones.
