Is there anything i can do to inspire my fish to breed? I have 2 cons in a 20g tank, tank has been set up for like 4 days or so. And yes they are both male and female. I got 2 Clay pots on there sides. My temps stay in the higher 70's. Could it be that the tank is not cycled yet. And i have seen that u can use cooler water when u do a water change, now one thing i have to ask, how much cooler? Would any of this help with the fact that my male keeps chasin the female around. I have put in a dither fish today, im not sure if it has helped yet. So if someone could help me with this it would be great. Thx

Ooo your gonna want to cycle your tank first. The ammonia spike could likely kill your fish, although cons are pretty tough. Adverse effects like gill burn can still happen though.

Your fish will breed when thier ready. You may need to wait several months until your tank is established and your fish are 'settled in'. Add more decorations to the tank to allow the female to hide from the male if he gets too aggressive.

Do you have any access to established filter media to help seed your tank with good bacteria?

Adding not just one dither fish but a school of them will be much more helpful. What type of fish is it?

I would reccommend not adding any more until your tank is cycled. Test your water daily and make sure to do frequent water changes to help with the high ammonia. But dont touch the filter.... make sure it stays dirty for the bacteria.

Convicts breed like rabbits just feed them and make sure they have a clean tank. They will do the rest.

Once i start the water changes, when i add the cooler water, what temp should it be?

Dont worry about adding cooler water to make your fish breed yet. If your fish DO breed during the cycling process (very unlikely) I doubt the eggs would survive.

You need to start water changes right away, as that ammonia can skyrocket quite quickly and you dont want to loose your fish. For now make sure the temp is the same as your tank water (or very close to it).

Once your tank is cycled you may want to try adding cooler water to get your fish to mate, but with cons honestly its not nessecary. If you have a mated pair and the tank conditions are good then they will spawn.

Patience!
