my 75 gallon is running with a few fish and I have return and intake pipes from my rena xp3 canister,2 heaters, horking big via aqua skimmer, submersible uv sterilizer and 2 powerheads.

do people use sumps just to make tank look better?

Is it easy to make one out of a 10-20 gallon aquarium and hang on overflow?

what about return to tank?

would my rena canister still be ok? Is it risky for overflows if power goes out?

just when I thought I was done spending.......!!

You can add a sump with a hang on overflow and a pump return. They can (and should) be configured to prevent flooding, but are still riskier than built ins, since there is a risk of the overflow getting clogged by a snail.

Sumps are used to: hide equipment like probes, heaters, etc; supplement bio- or chemical filtration media; increase water volume in the system.

I wouldn't use the canister as the return, mostly because that a lot of extra plumbing, since you'd have to get the water from the overflow to the sump, from the sump to the canister, and then from the canister to the tank--the more complex your plumbing, the more likely it will fail.
