hey everyone, I have a 75 gallon setup that has been running for a good 8 months now, and seems to be quite established. I have 2 blue damsels, a yellow tang, and used to have a flame angel (RIP :-( ) He got sucked onto the filter tube overnight and it was all quite tragic. Anyways, Im really kicking myself because I was going to upgrade to a wet/dry sump a while before but hadnt gotten to it. Currently, the filter I have is just the standard hanging over the back filter and I know that if I want better filtration, less risks to my fish, and possibly corals in the future, I need to upgrade. So I ordered a nice wet/dry filter off ebay and should be getting it within the next few days.

My question is, how long should i keep the old filter running at the same time as the new filter so as to be sure that the new one establishes itself? Any other advice you have to offer?

Your new filter's media will have to establish itself and grow before it can run on your tank alone. Your new filter will have the same cycle go on with it as your old HOB filter. I wouldnt remove your old filter for several weeks. I'd say at least 6 weeks for a tank that size. That way you can know for sure that your filter will be able to handle the load for that tank. Check with you LFS, I know mine has bio balls in a large tank that already seeded.
