Does anyone know if the med Maracyn will cause foaming on the surface of the water, this is the second day of treating the tank and it appeared the first day, almost as if I added soap. I have lots of aeriation but it is actually difficult to feed the fish as it is so covered!! Do you think the frogs and gouramis can get their heads up through the foam to get air?
I have fin rot in my 55 gallon tank. 30 fish, gourami mix, black ghost, 2 dwarf frogs, 5glass cats, 2 butterfly fish and lastly, the guppies, who I believe brought the disease. I have lost 3 guppies so far, the rest look like they are at a standstill with the disease.
I am a good 2 hours from any large city, so getting info is a problem. The tank has been up and running since sept with no problems until bringing home the guppies a week ago.
I read the info on the meds and it said no water changes needed, I keep reading that fin rot is due to poor tank conditions but everything was perfect until intorducing the guppies, and the two males lost their tails completely overnite. I thought it due to nipping altho I never saw any fish in the tank act aggressive to any other, not even the two male guppies and they seem very small compared to the 3 females. The two males actually hung together like best buds?
I did medicate them in a seperate tank first until noticing that a fire red gourami in the main tank had a BB size tumor by it's mouth, also thought one of the large orange gouramis was acting very sluggish for the next two days and paler than it's partner. Then two other guppies in the tank got some white spots as if salt on them, I assumed Ich? That was when the pet shop thought I should bomb the whole tank.
I brought the guppies in not only to add more color but also to provide live fry for the other fish to eat. Looks like they are getting back at me!? :duh:
Just did a test with the Mardel 5 in 1 and here is how it reads: nitrate 20 nitrite 0 total hardness 120 total alkalinity under 80 and ph6.8, do you all trust the 5/1 as I have had different readings between that brand and the lone PH test kit. Now I wonder if the others test results could be off too? thanks for any info you can offer~ Kat
