OK, my friend is getting a 55 gallon tank and he already has 1 small peacock cichlid in his 29gal.
here's a list of fish he would like...he's only interested in adding 1 more fish.
Buffalo Head Cichlid
Buttikoferi Cichlid
Red Zebra Cichlid
some species of crayfish
what if any are compatible with peacocks?
thanks a bunch guys!

here is a website that gives you compatible tropical fish. Just put the name of the fish you are seeking tank mates for, and a list of compatible fish will be displayed.

I've been looking and I can't find any really good info. The buffalo head cichlid is the preferred choice but they originate from the amazon river and I have been told that lake malawi cichlids (like the blue peacock) don't mix with cichlids from another region.

I believe the Buffalohead (Steatocranus casuarius) is from Africa (though not from the Rift Lakes), and not from the Amazon (unless there's another fish with the same common name).

what you've been told is correct :D
And not just any type of Malawi cichlid will work either. Other peacocks or smaller haps will work, as well as less-aggressive mbuna. The red zebra might be too aggressive for it. The trouble here is, if you only keep a few of these fish together your gonna run into problems. For a 55 gallon I reccommend around 10 fish of moderate aggression (depending on thier adult size of course). You shouldnt really overstock a 55, but it can be done. Visit http://www.malawimayhem.com and have a look through thier species profiles section. There your friend will find pictures of malawis and he can see what interests him. There is also a 'tank recipes' article in the "articles" section where you can see what species will be compatible with peacocks (Aulonocara) in that tank size.
