Quarantine for how long?

I understand the reasons behind quarantining a new arrival but how long should a quarantine last? What is a long enough time period to be sure that the new ones are healthy and won't be infecting my established tank?

6 weeks of HEALTHY time. This means the timer starts as soon as the fish goes into the tank, but resets if the fish becomes ill and must be treated in anyway. Ditto if an additions are made part way through the quarantine (which is a bad idea and should be avoided, but just in case).

The word quarentine derives from the latin for "forty" (cuarenta). A quarentine, strictly speaking, lasts forty days!

from my experience, new fish show problems withing two week. if it has anything it will show right away, because stress of moving will trigger the outbreake. this is just in my opinion. now if the fish got sick then it's another story.

6 weeks is perfect, But it depends on fish and if you can QT them. for some fish, it may be a bad idea leaving them in a small tank, and may not survive due to stress, or other needs that cannot be met in a QT.
