My tanks are generally clean with algae only really growing in my goldie tank (poopmachines + no live plants = algae). In all my other tanks right now, I have what you call the invisible water effect so clarity is not a problem. I was just wanting to know the benifits of getting a diatom filter and/or a uv sterilizer.
A diatom filter is, just that, a filter. It will trap particles measured in microns, so it can theoretically trap some parasites and or harmful protozoa. It will clear green water in no time at all. I use mine if I am doing some digging in the substrate for some reason, or scrape algae off the glass. It is a useful
tool some times, but not essential.
A UV sterilizer is used to kill bacteria, algae, and really any micro life living in the water column that goes thru it. It is a particle zapper. Again, it is very useful at times, like during a green water attack that you can't figure out, during ick treatment, etc. but not essential.
