been trying to get squared away on the lighting issue. i'm going to ask these questions in random order cuz as i think of 1 question, another one pops up

as a starter, im a newbie looking to go reef...very basic stuff, but good quality....not concerned so much about particular types of fish or coral but just setting up (within reasonable layman standards) a simple realistic reef. happy to focus on cleaner crew types and not overstock. small is good .. am looking to stay under 40 gallons and yes i know about the sensitivities but i just dont want to commit (at this point) to such large water changes. if i'm gonna commit to this task, at least keep the number of water buckets to a minimum

oh and i'd ask more of these questions at the 2 LFS in my area but they're either too busy or too young or too eager to sell a particular product

so...

why the options with # of bulbs? same light will offer 1 or 2 or 4 or 6 bulb models ...

if u need x watts, do u go by the watt of each bulb or multiply the bulb x watt ie...4x50 watts give you only 50 watts or 200 watts

whats all this yakking about ballast....is it like the motor in the light fixture? can a ballast work with MH or T5 or PC or does each type of bulb have a particular ballast

whats difference between actinac and regular and moon lights...from the way they're discussed it seems like actinac is a brand or type of moon light

there are references to number of cords and number of switches..i'm guessing this has to do with the number of bulbs referenced above and the day vs moon thing

given what i've read and heard, and the 'cool appearance' factor, i like the lites on stilts.. no way i'm gonna put holes in my ceiling to suspend lighting from my ceiling and the lite on the tank seems to present heat issues...and like i said, the stilts just look cool (so how dopey is that)

think i'll stop now....before the questions start again.....the horror of it all
