Just plain tap water??
I got sump yesterday, but haven't been able to test my skimmer yet. So filled my sump with tap water, and popped in my ASM G2 skimmer.
Will it start foaming over time?? Nothing really happening yet, but only been 3 hours.
How long does it generally take for skimmer to start foaming, or will it not due to tap water and no polution??

It won't do anything in tap.

You'll get a little foam if there are any dissolved organics in the water. Just wait for the water company to start mucking around with the pipes outside and then you'll see some foam. :p:

Actually, I believe that ASM recommends that new skimmers be run in freshwater for a day or two to clean them out (or something like that).
One thing that I encountered... when running it in freshwater, after a couple of hours, the skimmer pump (Sedra 3500) would start to make a strange sound, which I would describe as a "groan". So far, since running it in SW for several days, this has not happened at all.

Really?
WOW, looks like im way ahead of the game. Wasen't a waste of time at all. Never got that groaning sound though that you talk about.
Edit: Mac, do you have any links for moding G2 with a bigger pump like a sedra 5000?? Any idea how much better performance you get with bigger pump??

No, but I did read a post at (I think) the asmskimmer.com forum, where someone asked if he could order the G2 with the Sedra 5000, and the admin responded that they probably could arrange that. While that is far from an actual report of how much better it would work, the fact that the admin did not say "we could do it, but it wouldn't be benefical" means it's probably not a bad idea.
That said, I think the stock G2 will be plenty big enough for my 90 gallon tank. But after having the skimmer running for a few days, I would, however, really like to have that gate valve mod. I don't mind getting my hands wet, but it's quite difficult to make precise adjustments... when trying to raise or lower the output tube just a little bit, it ends up moving a lot.
