Hey, I'm gonna be setting up a 29Gal for a single (or pair of) firemouths. I wanna use sand as substrate and I'm thinking lots of driftwood and some plants. Is this very close to their natural habitat?

Does anyone have a better suggestion? I would like it to be fairly close to a natural setting.

thanks a million!

Sounds good I would be sure and put in a powerhead mine loves to get into the current. I have rock/sand mix in mine. Anyhow heres a pic of what I have the light is making my water look yellow but ohwell.

looks good! I'm going for a kind of murky amazon look and luckily I have a powerhead that was given to me. thanks for the help!

I wouldnt use a powerhead as its not benifecial to the fish and will probably kick up a lot of sand. In turn this will clog your filter and create problems. Imo and Ime the powerhead will create more hassle than what there worth.

how do you guys handle sand in a tank...i'm assuming you can't vaccuum it like gravel

I use play sand it is basicly really small rocks and you can vac it, before it goes in the tank it is best to rise is heavily and vac it to remove most of the smaller particles so you dont have to worry about alot of them later.

On powerheads of course if you have one that is to powerfull it will kick up sand but if you have the right one it is only benifical to the fish. I have keep several firemouths for 5+ years all w/ powerheads w/ out any problems.

Firemouths are diggers aren't they? I think they would be happier with a small gravel that they can dig around in.

Mine seems to love filtering the sand through his gills I belive they can filter sand better than gravel anyhow.

reguarding the sand, just go to the local hardware store, and by some play sand. Be sure to rinse and wash it first, but you will save much money on it there. and regurading the powerhead, i have one and my fish love it, it keeps the current flowing, and there isn't anything close it messing with my sand

thanks for the advice! I'm definitely going to go with play sand and my powerhead...i'm not sure about live plants but I may try some that don't require roots to feed.

BTW, will cories be compatible with firemouths?
