I just finished installing my 10 gallon sum for my 44 gal. The LFS filled me in on how to prevent water from back siphoning and is very simple. Simply drill a hole in the output nozzle, preventing the backsiphon because it allows it to breathe.
what I did was melted a hole with my solder gun and magic. I unplugged the pumpo several times to try it out and w/o failure everytime, no check valve or anything needed!

Good tip, make sure that hole is clear during routine maintenance and your good to go.
