I have a green finger leather that started out small and is now quite huge. How can I trim it back and cultivate additional pieces?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I just hack off pieces of my leathers with a new razor blade.

How much can I do at a time?

I don't like taking more than a third of the branches at a time, but I really have no idea what the limits are. Taking the whole capitulum off my toadstool caused it to go into a near-fatal meltdown a few years back, but I don't know how common that is.

Do you just use netting to secure it to another rock or do you glue it? If you glue it what specific kind of glue do you use?

Sorry about the 20 questions.

You wouldn't have to ask 20 questions if I remembered to give more complete answers.

Leathers take forever to take hold, so you want something stable. Super glue gel works, and I usually gently secure the frag with a cable tie. Within a few weeks to a month it should secure itself.

for alot of soft corals you can just jab a toothpick through them and into a rock.. it will atach itself.. neting works too and so does super glue..
I think the toothpick is easiest...

Toothpick method is not the best IMO the coral become loose etc and it is just a pain. You can use putty (can get expensive) I prefer to use Hot glue gun, and glue the cut part onto the rock, eventually the coral will form a base over the glue and you won't be able to see it.

Leathers produce slime that keeps them from attaching just with glue in my experience. It may be that I have too much flow, who knows. Stitching leathers always worked for me but it’s more time consuming. Attaching the cutting with glue and then putting a net over the cutting will guarantee that it wont flout around the aquarium.

Thread is the best way IMO, and it doesn't take that long.
