Hi, i just started a salt water tank and i am having problems with the salinity. It reads 1.030 on my hydrometer and i am wondering how to lower it. Do i add more salt or do i take some out?? sorry for the very newbie question but i am in need of help!!! thanks

How big is your tank and where is the water level. I woiuld start off by taking a gallon of water out and replacing it with a gallon of freshwater. And take a reading. Contine to do this and your salinty should start to go down. Also maybe look into investing a refractometer. It measure salinity and specific gravity and is more accurate than a hydrometer.

Is there anything else in the tank? If not then just take the gallon out and put freshwater in like the above post. If there is something in there like snails or whatever you have to change it slowly.

thanks a lot for the help..since getting the hydrometer i have learned that it has a rep of being very inaccurate. I have one Yellow Tang and i will over time lower the salinity

I assume the tank has cycled?
