Have a 29 gallon set up and would like a hob power filter, but am confused on which one to get. Have a cascade 500 canister, but am not happy with it. Water is always cloudy and it is a pain to take apart and clean, and when I hook it back up, a lot of stuff comes out of it, even though I clean out all hoses and canister itself. Think a hob would be easier to clean and manage. Would like to know which one would be good for the size tank I have. Also have green water a lot and would like to get something to fix that. Help!! Any suggestions would be great!!

Aquaclear because you can use whatever media you like and they have a good flow. You didn't say if it was a long or high or what kind of fish you are going to have, but unles your fish really don't like current, I would also use a powerhead with sponge filter. If these don't take care of your green water, reduce the light or use live plants.

I have had just a AC500 on my 29G with up 10 African Cichlids (messy eaters) and never had an issue with clarity or water problems. I like AC because of the variety of media and it comes stock with sponges.

As for the green algae - there are lots of posts here to help with that - just do a search. If you cant find what you are looking for, then by all means we can help!

Best HOB filters are either Aquaclears or Penguin/Emperors w/ Biowheels. I personally favor the Emperor 280 and 400. For a 29g the 280 would be fine for you. It utilizes all 3 stages of filtration, has a slot for extra media and is relatively quiet while still providing good surface agitation. Imho, a good power filter with a Biowheel or 2 is sufficient for any aquarium, UGFs and canisters are too much of a PITA for me to bother with when a good HOB does the same job, for less time and money. Good luck.

I have used the Aquaclears with lots of success. The AC 50 (or whatever the new name is) is great for that size tank (the 30 would be fine as well if you have a low fish load). The nice thing is that you are able to add filter floss very easily which really helps to clean the particles out of the water.

I have about 15 guppies, 2 mollies, a couple tetras and 5 neons. The tank is bigger in length than height. There are no real plants and light is only on for a couple hours. Tried real plants before and was loaded with snails. I will definately get an aquaclear 500 or emperor 280. Thanks everyone for your help.
