how many clowns should one have?

o.k. here is the thing. long time ago i got two clown fish and one didn't make it. so after some time i wanted to get my clown a little friend, but everybody told me that because my clown has been by himself for a while he will kill any clown i'll introduce. i just found out that if i want to get another clown i better get a small one, better a small group, for my older clown to let them stay. so i got two small clowns. my clown fish doesn't mind them at all and one clown always stays close to my older one. but my other baby clown is kinda left out and for the most part hangs out byhimself(please note that he eats like a horse, so he is not ill). now, do i go out and get him a friend now?
 
Only 1 pair of clownfish should be put in a tank, unless it is big. Probably the smaller clownfish, has paired up with the bigger one, or is trying to. when they pair up, they might get aggressive to the other clown, so the smart thin to do would be to sell the other clown that is by itself, or get 1 more if you have a big tank. (how big is your tank?)
 
i'm thinking about traiding the lonely cuty for neon blue gobby. but it's not possible because i don't really know anybody with marine tanks. it's just a thought. but really, i have no idea how i would be able to find him a new home around here. maybe it's easyer than i think. i never tryed to sell any fish, or anything related with fish tanks, always gave away all my freshwater fish that got too big for my tank. that'll be cool to find out how easy it will be to sell my clown fish. what should i ask for it, like $5.00 or something closer to the store price? :rant:
 
When/if i sell fish, i normally ask half price, or the store may give you a credit note for him.

40 gallons is way to small for 2 pairs of clowns, infact i am setting up a 40 gallon, and i plan on keeping 1 purple firefish, 2 ocellaris clowns, randalls anthias, 3 cleaner shrimp, and my yellow headed sleaper goby which will be moved into a 7 ft tank.

Basically you tank could keep around 5 fish or so, are you keeping reef or fowler?
 
yes, i have a reef. eventualy i'll go with bigger reef tank and make this seahorse tank. this is my first reef tank, so i'm learning with no so much stuff to kill. but so far so good. it has been several months now but i hear corals need about a year to die. so i'm waiting... to see if they are o.k. with my care. :joe:
 
lol....keeping more than one clown is a very tricky proposition....though it can be done....for about six months now,...i have been keeping a maroon clown(full grown) with a ocellaris clown(also full grown) with no problems. the trick is to get them as juveniles. the older they get, themore likely the bigger one(usually the maroon) will kill the smaller. i do not recommend keeping more than one species together. if you do, make sure the newest one is reletively smaller than the oldest, as the oldest will turn to female, and maybe youll get lucky as i did(though two diffrent species getting along is rare, and im just waiting for the day the maroon gets intolarant of the ocellaris and kills it, though right now the ocellaris is the more aggressive one) it can be done under the right conditions, though ill be the first to recomend against it. :devil:
 
so far clowns are not fighting. i'll give them more time and with any sign of problem i'll give up one. i thought, when i did my search, that you must get clowns in odd numbers, like 3 or 5. now i'm not so sure. yes, about my reef. my reef has one problem that i know about for a while, but can't find what i'm looking for or if i find it i'm broke. that's i don't have enogh live rock. the only rock that i like is the one that have interesting shapes, have holes in it, and light in weight. i find one of those once in a while and usualy don't have any money to get it. later when i get the money the rock is gone. i have bubble coral, grape, 3 different types of pollips, green mushroom, green brain, feather dusters of many kinds, but not those that are hard to care for. i don't think that i forgot anything. here is another ? that relates to pollips. i have 4 pollips that are pale pink in a middle, i don't know the breed, and one of them doesn't get that much light because the other 3 just got very big fast. so how do i help the little guy out? please, in ditail if it involves moving it :duh:
