Just wanted to share some pictures of my two tanks. My 37 gal has been going for some years now, but I have only now added Flourite planting substrate and a few varieties of plants.

The live plants are much more interesting to watch my fish investigate than my plastice plants. :P

In my 37 gallon I have:

2 Discus, 1 Turquoise 1 Yellow Pigeon
1 Dwarf Gourami male
4 Clown Loaches
2 Bronze Corys
21 Neon & Cardinal tetra

I also have a quarantine tank which I have two female Dwarf Gourami. I am going to move the male up with the females in a few weeks.

Hope you like the pictures.

your tank is very beautiful vey colorful but im thinking that it might be a little small for cloan loaches espescilly 4 of them most people do a minimum of 55 gallons for clowns but it does look nice i like it

That's a neat set up! I agree that the clowns will outgrow your 37, it is recommended to have them in at least 55 gallons.

Well hey, at least you didnt mention anything about discus being in a community tank, and such a small one at that. The clowns are my favorite fish in the tank, always investigating my entire tank. They have quite a bit of personality.

I really plan on making a bigger home for the clowns and discus in a 55+ tank. Both the clowns and discus have grown remarkably after owning those fish for only a month.

I forgot to mention what types of live plants I have.

Red Cabomba
Red Telanthera
Red Ludwigia
Anachris
Micro Sword
Dwarf Sagittaria
Val Sproutling

I raised the left side of the tank's substrate by about 4" with the flourite. I added the flourite about 2 years after the tank had been established, so I took great care to rinse the (VERY) dirty substrate before adding it to the tank. I placed a few rocks leaned up by a supporting rock to make natural barriers and created a 'sunken' appearance. The original gravel is still fully visible on the right side.

Very nice looking tank...don't forget that whatever substrate and rock you add to your tank disperses water...so you probably only have about 30 gallons of water or so give or take...You might want to consider upgrading to a 55.

Thats a very good point about the displacement and you are right on with your prediction. 37 gallons*8=296 (full water weight) subtract 50 lbs for gravel, then divide by 8 again is about 30 gallons remaining.

I think that I'll be waiting until I have the money to buy something like a 60 or 75 gallon tank. In which case, i'll transfer the discus and clowns, leaving a nice shoal of neons and two catfish.

I am going to move the male dwarf out into the female's tank not just on the grounds of breeding, but also because he is territorial enough to lunge at the discus. I have sort of a strange pecking order in the tank. The yellow pigeon bullies the turquoise discus and the gourami tries bullying both of them. The turquoise discus is recessive to the yellow, but the turquoise does lunge back in defense against the gourami. I really didnt expect any of those fish to be territorial between species.

Well, you can do what I do, watch craigslist.or ads...if you have one near you, you can save a lot on tanks. I almost bought an 80 gallon with tons of equipment for $50.00. No sense in paying full price and you can get your tank a lot earlier...good luck!

Thats incredible! 50 bucks for an equipped 80 gallon? Regardless, though, I live in Lincoln Nebraska and I would have to find something locally because its not really worth it to ship something like that with all that weight. Unfortunately Lincoln isnt big enough to have more than 10 stores in town, with a good sum of them being petco and petsmart. Petsmart is far better in my experience, but to find fish like discus I have to go to a privately owned fish store. As for plants, a good variety can be found but aquariumplants.com has the really hard to find plants and they're based out of South Dakota which is good for my shipping purposes.

where did you find your female dwarf gouramis????????

LFS! Muahaha!

Heh...but seriously all I had to do was be persistant and call back to the LFS here that carried the more rare fishes. I had requested them several times but they were always gone by the time I went in there. I happened to be in the right place at the right time, so I bought up two of them because they were so rare. I plan on putting my beautifully developed male in with the two in the hopes that having two females will keep one from being bullied to death. Its my first attempt at breeding, so no matter what I'm going to learn a thing or two from it.
