well..here's the story

last week i baught a nice looking adult pearlscale angel from the LFS, this was the last fish i planned on getting for the 55.

i have never purchsed a sick fish from them before, so i made the incredibly stupid decision to not quarantine, after a day in my 55, it started showing signs of illness, fins clamped, shyness, no feeding response,.

i put in a mix of pimafix ad melafix wich seemed to work, the fins looked better and it was out more, but still no feeeding response, the next day it was dead

this was the 4th angel to be introduced to my tank, after it died, my male koi angel started to show the same symptoms, a day later, he died, after that, my large marble angel...my favorite fish in the whole tank, started showing symptoms, and last night, she died, she was 6 1/2 years old

i had another smaller koi female in there, but she was taken out and placed into a different tank, she was not showing any symptoms, and now seems to be much more active and eating well, i also removed my discus, just in case

but the angels are the only ones who where affected, all the other fish(rams, cories, otos. and rasboras) are all fine, they are all eating, and very active

i suspect that a virus was introduced from the pearlscale angel, as the other angels are the only ones to be infected

so, in conclusion
for all the people who dont have quarantine tanks setup, i URGE you to get one set up, no matter where you get your fish from, and no matter how good they are taken care of, QUARANTINE, it was absolutely devastating to see my big beautiful angels dead

i have learned my lesson now, and set one back up last night

Sorry to hear about your losses KingOfTheDeep. What a shame.

I've heard of quarantine times lasting anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. Is there any consensus on how long to quarantine new arrivals for?

Also--what about those of us who can't have a QT running all the time--would it be safe to set up a new (but uncycled) tank just for temporary purposes?

You do not have to have QT operating 24/7, just have the tank available and keep the filter operating in whatever tank you are running.

My standard QT is 4 weeks. Any signs of other than absolute normality restarts the clock.

I agree with RTR. I QT my rainbows for at least 3-4 weeks.

Although *any* type of fish can get it or carry it, rainbows commonly carry Fish TB. The symptoms don't usually show up unless they are already sick or stressed, but once it does it kills the host and can spread to and kill all the bows in the tank. A form of it can even be passed to humans via cuts and open wounds in the hand.

Possibly something like that exists for angels. Some sort of virus that angels fall quickly to, but other fish have more of an immunity to it.

QT is an absolute must !!,,,,,,,,,,,,,40 days the required time period,if any disease or parasites are detected,,,,,then the 40 days start again AFTER the treatment ends,,,,,cheers

it is never good to loss a an angel you have for that long.

I recently had an ich outbreak. They were the first fish to go in, so they didn't infect other fish, but I was not pleased about having to treat in a planted display tank. I am now convinced and will quarantine all new arrivals.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I know you can become attached to fish - especially the 6 yr. old one...wow.

Thanks for the advice...well heeded.

i wish i could go back and either not buy the angel, or quarantine

it's hard to sit and look at the tank now, i am so used to her coming out and greeting me..and..loooking for food of course...lol

i am however, happy that my discus did not contract anything..it hurts even more to lose a fish that cost 40$ and up..especially if your attached to them

i have no idea what the Virus is, i've tried looking up the symptoms but nothing showed up

i am thinking maybe i should take the remaining fish and put them into a 30 gal that has a few mollies and platies (3 of each, running for a year) and do a full water change, as well as clean out all the decorations, maybe even replace the gravel, and put the fish back in once its cycled up again

dont want to introduce anymore angels just to have them die

heres a couple photos of the marble female a few months ago
