what type of filter is the best for a 55g tank?

if you want a power filter, a Emperor is nice

As you see in my signature, I use various filters for a 55. The Aqua Clear is the main filter and the Whisper and UGF are more secondary devices.

IMO, if you want a power filter, for the money I love the AC's.

You could also consider a canister filter which, when sized right, will do an excellent job filtering your tank. :)

if i get a new filter do i have to recycle my tank?

Unless you are able to use the old filter media for a whlie to redistribute the bacteria, then yes you probably will have to go through a mini cycle. I am guessing you have an established 55g already in place? If so what are you running on it now? How long has it been set up? I have a new 60g I am setting up and will be getting the same kind of filter for that as I have on my current 20g tank. I simply got 2 vs. 1. This way I can use the sponge from the old tank and keep a healthy new enironment. I use the AquaClear power filters. I reaaly like them and the seem to really move some water. Hope this helps...

i have a 29g tank now that has been running for about 5 months. but i want to get a 55g in the next month so i can get a oscar its a baby my buddy got and doesnt have enough room for. he thought that he could keep it in a 20g tank. and i yelled at him so he said just take it. so i have a oscar on the way and no tank. unless you think that i can keep in the the 29g for a month or two untill i get the 55g cycled.

I kept my oscar in a 29 for a few months before I got my 55, In the 29 I had a whisper 30 and top fin 20 power filters, then he was about 3-5 inches. I moved him into my 55 with an XP3 and he has grown to 9-10 inches.

Buy the new filter first and put that on your 29g. Let it run for a couple of weeks or so -- longer is better -- before you get the 55. Set the 55 up, take the new filter off the 29g and put it on the 55g. Should almost be an instant cycle, easy on Oscar.
