Question about filtration and currents

Hi, I am not completely happy with the filtration of my Penguin 150. Its on a 30 gal tank. I am considering buying a small Fluval to add to it. I am unfamiliar with the Fluvals. What kind of current do they produce, and is it adjustable? Also, has anyone found a good way to modify the current coming out from a penguin? Just to diffuse it, or spread it over a wider area to make it less powerful in one area of the tank? Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I have a Fluval 204 in a planted 20 gal. tank and I like it because you can cut the flow back if you like which I run about half way open and it still allows a good fair amount of current.I also have an XP3 on my larger 75 gal. African tank which has an attachment valve which you hook up to the outlet if you want to cut current backThe fluval is very very quite and you actually have to look into the tank to check for movement to see if its working.I used to have a penquin when I first started my planted tnak and I installed a piece of plexglass below where the water flows out to spread the flow out more instead allowing it to flow out like a waterfall.

sometimes placing a peice of filter floss or a sponge in the outlet can break the flow and reduce current. I've done it many times before.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I try to do most of my stuff diy, so I will look at modifying the Penguins output tonight. I jumped the shark at lunch and bought a Fluval 204 that was on sell for $59.00. Super-filtration here we come! I wonder if a spare media bag from the Fluval and a dremel with 2 screws can make a "current catcher" coming out of that Penguin? Possibly able to put cotton balls in the bag to diffuse it more?

Hmmm. ideas, ideas.

Hey Walker,

Go to WalMart or similar and buy a package of "knee-highs" nylons. Cut to size as needed, and rubber band it to the exhaust nozzle of the Fluval. It should diffuse the output quite a bit without having to cut back the overall flow. You can also double it up if needed.

By the way, those knee-highs are in a package of 4 for a buck. They make excellent media bags, and also are great to attach to a battery powered gravel vac.
