A good one with a glowlight in the background

You never really see any good pics of the orange/black variety so here are my pair. They are about 3.5 inches long.

Thanks for the comment Jodi!

Not really aggressive, they like to head butt eachother, but its all in good fun it seems. They have never once bothered my glowlight tetras or my cory cat. The web sites I have found describing them says they typically reach about 4-4.5 inches.

Nice tank and fish. Seems like rainbows are getting very popular these days, and no wonder. I wouldn't mind setting up a tank for them myself. I do have a spare 55g but have other plans for it. A pity.

They are pretty great fish, very beautiful. Are they new? They seem to be sporting a columnaris infection (very common with new rainbowfish).

Also, I hate to say it, but I must: Rainbowfish are schooling fish. They are highly interactive with each other. I would suggest getting more than just the two you have - but you simply don't have the room in a 20g tank (I wouldn't keep even two in a 20g, honestly). Rainbows are naturally very active swimmers that require quite a bit of space. THen just the size of them, which with a fullsize adult male which may very well reach 6"....

Is there any way you can upgrade to a larger tank?

Sorry to be a bummer.

And reiv - they've always been popular. I mean....just LOOK at them! they're all so gorgeous.

I have had them in the tank for about 3 weeks and they have developed that columnaris infection, do you have any reccommendations to treat it?

My rainbow fish seem perfectly happy in my 20 gallon. Basically the whole front half is open for swimming, they swim around all day.

columnaris

By the way, how were you guys able to identify columnaris from the pics?

Oh maybe it's just me. I seem to see more posts about them as time goes by. One day I will have my rainbowfish.

Rainbowfish are prone to fungus and can develop Fish TB if certain conditions are not met:

1. They sensitive to water. Nitrites, ammonia or high nitrates are a big no
2. They need fresh water, at least 50% once per week, better is twice per week
3. They need LOTS of O2
4. They need LOTS of swimming room
5. They need a proper school, very minimum of three. Six is best.
6. No stress. They will develop fungus if they are stressed.

If you correct the above that is how you can get rid of the fungus. Treating them with meds may make all of it or some of it go away. For a while.

However, those fish are sporting a fair amount of mouth threads and if you don't do something you might lose them. I've lost two rainbows to this type of thing, at the very beginning about a month after first got them and I didn't know better. They went downhill very fast.

Your fish have fungus, they are not happy. Parkinson's can get pretty big, much too big for a 20g tank. Not only do you only have two, they are both males and they are in a small space. You'd better watch out for some fighting.

They *are* beautiful fish, but please get a bigger tank and more tankmates.
